Apps That Make it Easy to Sell Your Video Direct to Newsrooms

Jason asks: I was the only one recording a historical, internationally known building burning down in my hometown. I know the news would love to have this video. I read your advice of selling footage to the news and wondered if there was a quicker way to submit the footage to major outlets at the same time?

Answer: Breaking news can happen anywhere, anytime. But because most news agencies do not have reporters everywhere all the time, many depend on stringers or freelancers to capture and deliver footage they can use on air.

If it’s a fire, police chase, natural disaster, crime in progress or terrorist attack and you find yourself pulling out your camera phone in the right place at the right time, you now have the ability to document and send your photos or video footage directly to multiple, hungry news agencies all with one click thanks to any one of these four apps.

The basic concept behind these stringer apps is simple: download the app, create an account, submit your video, wait to get paid. But not all of these apps are the same.

Here is a simple review of all six top stringer apps:

  1. Here’s how it goes, they put out a call to shoot something, twenty people show up, the first person to upload wins or…they text you asking you to be at XyZ location, you agree and when you get there, you guessed it ten others are there. The first person or sometimes the second person to upload wins. They also favor certain people where they just text them and don’t even bother sending out a request and here’s my favorite, keeping a request up after you call in to tell them that there was nothing to shoot at the location they gave, like I said don’t waste your time with these apps unless you get to have exclusive coverage

  2. I have had the Stringr app for a while but I’ve never actively used it. This past Saturday, I was contacted by stringer via personal text asking me to shoot a local newsworthy gathering. Based on the potential $$, I agreed to take time out of my day and go to this area and spend time videoing numerous clips. Immediately came back home and upload each one of them and let them know via text. I have since heard nothing back. While I get that they don’t guarantee you anything and that any payment is based on news outlets purchasing the videos, I don’t appreciate being led on that this one was pretty much a slamdunk. Lesson learned, I won’t make a special trip out to video for them again

  3. I did accept a shoot request through the Stringr app just to see if I would get paid. It was a request for 2 minutes of footage of a neighborhood. Took about 10 minutes to shoot then 30 minutes to edit, export, and upload. I was paid $40 next day via Paypal.

  4. If you like shooting video, have some skills or want to get better, Stringr is a great app. It’s true– the Stringr team will contact you directly if there are assignments in your area. It’s also true that not all video you shoot is purchased. However, well composed, steady video that takes into account the specifics of the request, is almost always purchased. And if you contact the Stringr team– they are always happy to give feedback and tips on how to up your game.

  5. I received two requests within one week and I shot what they needed. I uploaded quickly and received immediate response via text as to whether my clips were what they were looking for. I was paid both times at the end of the next business day. I highly recommend!
