Capturing the Northern Lights on Video

John asks: I’ve been looking all over the internet for an answer but no luck. I’m taking my Nikon DSLR camera to Norway to capture the Northern Lights. I was wondering if it would do the job. To adequately capture this event what specs or settings do I need to be aware of? I’m told that filming the lights are impossible without specialist equipment but I don’t believe it after seeing all of the amateur videos on YouTube. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated

Answer: We’re always here to offer you advice, John. On this podcast Gary Boyle, Canada’s Backyard Astronomer, past President of the Ottawa Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and our on call Astrovideographer who happens to be in the middle of an existing Northern Lights display as of this recording, gets into the details on what is necessary to capture and share this wonder of nature.

  1. I shoot 0db gain when using the 64 frame shutter, which is my normal method, sometimes I use 3db or 6db with the 16 frame shutter when the Aurora is bright.
