My new MacBook Pro has only one 400 and one 800 Firewire port. I used to have several Firewire 400 ports for my equipment. How can I import footage from my Firewire 400 based camcorder and use my Firewire 400 based hard drive at the same time?

A few things to try:

You can daisy chain firewire devices together. Almost all external hard drives have a second firewire port on it to pass through to another device.

1. Purchase a firewire hub. One end of the plug goes into the port on the laptop and the other end can provide 4 to 8 firewire outlets depending on what you choose.

2. You can always get an Expresscard to expand your existing firewire ports, Expresscards are Firewire Host Adapter for Multimedia Application, which is specifically designed to plug into a desktop or laptop equipped with an ExpressCard slot ? which the MacBook Pro has. Just do a websearch for "expresscard firewire" should get you plenty of hits.

3. Purchase a cable that goes 800 to 400 and use that 1394b jack.
