I have some home videos that I want to burn onto disk but the sound is awful due to my cameras built in microphone and sound limiter. Is there anyway to reverse the effects of this limiter so that when you see, for instance, fireworks go off it actually sounds like the real thing & not just a pathetic little pop?

In a word, no.  You will have to add sound effects, a legitimate process in film and video to make the fireworks sound "right."  You may be able to find appropriate sounds on the net for free if you do a search.

You could also try to bump up audio levels and do some manipulation of the sound with your editing software?many non-linear editing programs allow you to equalize specific sounds. A standalone program called "Cool Edit" (now called Adobe Audition) or something similar can also do the trick then just import the audio into your timeline.
