Betacam was based around the Betamax format, which provided much higher quality by running several times faster, increasing the amount of tape assigned to each frame of video. Beta SP is an enhanced version of Betacam. Beta SP quickly eclipsed the original format and has been the most widespread tape format for the past decade. Digital Betacam or Digi-Beta is Sony's current high end tape format. It offers uncompressed digital quality video and is the format of choice for many professional productions. MiniDV is the consumer format of DV25 tapes and is used on all consumer DV cameras. Finally, DVCAM is Sony's professional DV format, offering a wider, more durable tape formulation and longer maximum recording times.
