There are a few things to try:

1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.

2) In the FILE menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.

3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.

4) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices

5) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed

6) Cycle power to the deck or camcorder

7) Shut down the Mac and then restart (couple this with cycling power to the deck or camcorder)

If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

I just installed Final Cut studio 2 on my Brand New Mac Pro and it took 7 hours... I installed it on my other Mac Pro back in May and it maybe took maybe an hour. I have a image with multiple layers that I created wiih Photoshop, and I want to import the image into FCP and be able to have access to the individual layers. I know that the image needs to be saved as a PNG file in order to do this, but this is where I am having my trouble. When I try to save the the file as a PNG in Photoshop, it doesn't give me the option to save the layers (it merges all of the layers and saves it a a single layered copy)

I use my powerbook for digital video editting. I connected to dv camera to the firewire 400 port and connect an external hard drive to the firewire 800 port. Recently when doing this the device that is connected last does not show as being connected.
