Instantly make your DVD player region free

Different countries employ different television broadcast systems. North America uses NTSC (National Television System Committee), while most of Europe and Asia uses the PAL (Phase Alternating Line) format. These television systems basically define the manner in which your television set displays the signal it receives.

What this essentially means is that a video recorded by an NTSC camcorder will not play on a PAL television set and vice-versa. The same principle applies to DVD as well; a PAL DVD will not play on most DVD players in North America. I recently ran into this situation when a friend in the UK sent me a DVD that wouldn’t play in my DVD player. I needed the footage right away and couldn’t go through conversions so I just punched in a few codes using the player’s remote control, and voila! I was able to view!

Here is what I did with my Philips DVP 642 (it was risky but it worked)

1. Turned on the player.
2. Opened the tray.
3. Pressed the following sequences on the remote: 7 8 9 OK 0
4. The number 0 appeared on the lower left side of my screen.
5. My player is now region free and played the DVD without issue!

NOTE: The 0 in the sequence above represents the region code. 0 = region free. If you want to change your player to just a specific region code, replace the 0 with the region number you want. The region code for your country can be found here.

There are over 40 DVD players you can do this to- each having different codes to allow region free viewing. See if yours is on the list.
