On Camera Video Light Recommendations
Question: I am a newbie indoor event videographer looking for a better on camera light for the two cameras I own: the Canon Elura (which I use for mid- shot or close-up interviews) and another for my XH-A1 (which is use for wider shots and extreme close-ups). The Bescor 50 watt dimmer light looks good but I’m just wondering what you would suggest. I was told that if I use a dimmer light color temperature would be lost. Your thoughts are appreciated.
Answer: 50 watts is way too much light in certain situations. If you’re doing some interview shots where the person is right in front of the camera with the light on- you could burn their eyeballs right out let annoy everyone for the rest of the night. I would recommend asking the venue to turn up the lights to get some of your shots or use a light that isn’t so bright.
On camera lights are very unflattering - the new LED rings are better, battery life is great, but output isn’t so high as to become a torch.
Color balance with tungsten on camera lamps isn’t a problem as there are no natural colors. Just make sure you white balance to the camera light, whatever type it is. The main downside is mood - the bright light frightens away the shy people and encourages outrageous behavior from others - so a barn door is pretty vital.

Thanks Good buy !!!
I’m currently researching various on-camera lights so I want to say thanks for the comparisons. It’s very much appreciated.
p.s. I like the FFVIII bg music.
A camera light should be good enough to light the ambience as well as the object. There’re other videos I made to shoot with object. If I only need to shoot an interview object in a few feet, Canon VL-3 will do the job right. Otherwise, Canon VL-10, SWIT, LP Micro all casts a circular spot in the video.
