First question. I am working on a project where I would like to recreate an auto accident. I plan on traveling down the same highway at the same time of day and shoot the video from the front seat.

Any tips, ideas, or other suggestions as to how to do this? In reality this is probably a bit to much for my very limited motion graphic skill set will allow, but this will be visual evidence for this case.

Answer: I would include some of the footage from your car in a larger video- but be careful!. We wouldn’t want someone producing an accident recreation video on any accidents you might have.

If this is going to be used as a presentation in court, you want it to be as accurate as possible otherwise the court is not going to see or understand the impact of what really happened. Courts view accident recreation videos and presentation on a regular basis- they are expecting to see something that looks professional.

• Your best bet is to recreate the accident using niche software made to recreate accident scenes- accident reconstruction software. There are tons of them out there and only a few that do a good job. One well known and popular one is: MapScenes – and there’s not a huge learning curve to get a decent video. iWitness Photo is another one but it has a learning curve.
• You can also create graphic illustrations and include them in a video with this easy to use software Smart Draw
• The other option is using Google Sketchup to create the animations – it’s free and has some pre-designed animation you can include

This video will give you an idea of what Sketchup can do. The only downside to using this software is the learning curve.

You want to communicate to the viewer the details of the accident with ease without any distractions that could potentially take away from what really happened.
